Needle felting: create with wool and a needle

Needle felting (feltre agullat) is one of the most relaxing textile techniques: you transform wool fibre into figures and unique pieces using just a needle. At Borrissol you can learn and practise it at your own pace in Mataró, 30 minutes from Barcelona.

What is needle felting?

Needle felting (known in Catalan as feltre agullat) is a technique that turns loose wool fibre into a solid shape. With a special barbed needle you repeatedly poke the wool: the fibres tangle and compact until they take the shape you want. It needs no water, soap or machine: just wool, the needle and your hands.

What can you create?

With needle felting you can make three-dimensional figures (animals, characters, brooches), wool illustrations and "paintings" on a base, decorative pieces and small unique objects. It is a very versatile technique: equally suited to a delicate detail or a larger, sculptural piece.

A meditative technique for everyone

For beginners

You do not need to know how to draw or have any experience. It takes minutes to learn and improves with practice.

Meditative and relaxing

The repetitive motion of the needle is absorbing and calm: one of those activities that make you lose track of time.

Very versatile

From 3D figures to wool paintings or brooches: the possibilities are huge with very few materials.

Where to practise it at Borrissol

At Borrissol you can devote yourself to needle felting at Borla, our monthly textile workshop: a space to come at your own pace and create without rushing. It is a perfect technique for Borla, because it is enjoyed slowly and patiently.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need prior experience?

No. Needle felting is one of the most accessible techniques to start with; the instructor guides you from the very first moment.

How is it different from traditional felting?

Traditional (wet) felting uses water and soap to mat the wool. Needle felting does it dry, with just a barbed needle, which gives more control to create figures and details.

Where can I practise it?

At the Borla workshop at Borrissol, in Mataró. Get in touch and we will tell you about available places and schedules.
